To the Pure All Things Are Pure

Titus 1:15-16 (KJV)

15 Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled.

16 They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

You are what’s in your heart. The contents of your heart is what you think and speak. Just as the scent of roses fills a room, so will the contents of your mind and heart be broadcast for all to hear and see. The Bible makes it plain: A pure heart gives birth to pure insight, pure speech and acts. The lives of pure people purify the environment. Likewise a  defiled heart defiles its environment.

The quality of your conscience determines the kinds of decisions you will make. How many times a day do we listen to the news and hear details of atrocious acts of violence and wonder how anyone could do such things. Today’s verses answer this question. People who don’t know the Lord are by nature disobedient, “and unto every good work reprobate.” A person who is reprobate is unprincipled, lacking Godly discipline. The unbelieving mind and conscience are defiled or morally tainted. When your conscience is tainted there is very little that can prevent you from doing wrong.

The moral taint of the natural mind and conscience is cured by the shed blood of Jesus, which allows us to benefit from love of God and learn from the word of God. Jesus died and rose again so that men and women could choose to not be slaves to a defiled mind and conscience. But old habits of thinking and doing wrong die hard. In order to keep your mind and hearts pure, you have to remain in close relationship to the Lord. That means that Bible study, prayer and application of scriptures to your daily life have to become a part of your lifestyle. Faith is powerful, and the word of God is likewise powerful. They wash our minds and hearts clean, and give us a conscience that is tender towards the things of God. 2 Timothy 3:16 (Amplified Bible) says:

16 Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God’s will in thought, purpose, and action),

Hebrews 4:12 (KJV) tells us the word of God is alive and has power to guide us safely in all our decisions and situations:
12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Friend, Jesus is able to deliver you from the most defiled conscience and mind. Turn to Him today. He is the living water that gives eternal life, and His words and spirit and life.

Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!” (Ephesians 6:10).
