Eph 6:19-20 (KJV)
19 And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, 20 For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.
As donkeys will bray, and loudly, so the mouth of ignorance opens itself wide all day long. Opinions saturate the air filling every imaginable space and media. Outrageous statements and harsh assessments have no difficulty finding their way into our ears. Often they are eagerly embraced by listeners. Even when passively listened to, foolishness is dangerous, for what flies into our ears lingers in our minds. The irony is: All too often good men and women fail to speak.
Intimidated by the crowd, too many Christians reassure themselves that it is enough that they know what is right. The harsh, sharpened tongue of opposition that will attack them if they spoke out frightens them. So they leave Jesus tucked quietly in their inner meditations and conservative dress. When it comes to God and things eternal they prefer being invisible.
Not so Paul. He prays that the Lord will give him strength to boldly speak the word of God. Being misunderstood doesn’t stop him. By this time, he knows that the opposition is murderously angry at him, yet he prays not only to speak but to speak boldly “as he ought to speak.” It is his right to speak, his mission to speak. He is obeying the command to speak given by Jesus “Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel.”
Inventory your life today: Do your life and words preach the gospel? Are you afraid to speak boldly about the goodness of the Lord? Are you reluctant to speak of God at all? Who are you afraid of? What are you afraid of? When you stand before God to give an account for your life, will the things, situations and people who make you reluctant to proclaim the gospel matter? Anything we hold closer to our bosoms than God burns. So why bother? Dont’ be afraid. Speak boldly. Redeem the time “because the days are evil” (Ephesians 5:16).
May these words educate and comfort you today. Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10).
