Let those who love the Lord hate evil, for he guards the lives of his faithful ones and delivers them from the hand of the wicked. Psalm 97:10 NIV
There is a saying:”Burnt child scared o’ fire.” You might easily forget the good in your life, but pain stamps its lessons deep into your memory. The Bible gives us detailed instructions for how to avoid a host of fiery, painful situations. Biblical instruction is one of many ways the Lord guards us against harmful people and things. He also gives us conscience, intuition, and discernment. Even in modern times He has been known to send His angels to protect His children from harm.
Jesus Be a Fence
According to Strong’s Talking Greek and Hebrew Dictionary (Strong’s), the word “guard” in today’s verse means “to hedge about, as with thorns.” The song “Jesus Be a Fence All Around Me” sings this truth. Although the Lord gives some general protection to people and even nations, He especially guards (observes, protects, regards, and saves) His “faithful ones.”
The Lord guards us in ordinary ways that we sometimes dismiss or take for granted. He gives us Godly parents, friends, neighbors and others to teach and warn us about dangerous people and situations. Loving the Lord paves the way for us to hate evil. In hating evil we avoid a multitude of dangerous situations. Many a soul sits in prison because of wrong decisions made while under the influence of bad company.
Life-Saver
God’s protection of His faithful one is manifold. He guards our lives, which extends beyond physical protection. The word “lives” in Psalm 97:10 encompasses “body, soul, spirit, and desires” (Strong’s). In loving God, we dwell in the secret place of the Most High, and abide under the shadow of the Almighty (Psalm 91), Who observes, protects, regards and saves the body, soul, spirit, and desires of His faithful ones. He saves to the uttermost (Hebrews 7:25), and provides all our need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19). Trust Him with your life today.
Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
