“Hold On” by Toby Mac
God Is True & Reliable
Romans 3:4 (KJV) “God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar…”
Those who claim the name of Jesus never have cause to doubt the promises of God. Our refrain for all intrusions of doubt is: “let God be true, but every man a liar.” Indeed, the scriptural promises concerning the unfailing reality of the truth and power to accomplish the will of God are many. The Bible says that the word of God is reliable, is a powerful instrument for our survival in everyday life and capable of changing reality. It is written:
Numbers 23:19 (KJV)
God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
Hebrews 4:12 (KJV)
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Isaiah 55:11 (KJV) So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
Of the many blessed purposes of the promises of God is the truth that God is reliable. The constant faithfulness and truth of God is the gold standard and the ultimate test of quality for every reality that presents itself to our senses and unconscious perceptions. When we are knocked down by circumstances and laid flat by the multiple discouragements of this life, it is the surety of the promises of God that prevent our feet from sinking like quicksand when we try to get up from being down. The winning breath of the Holy Spirit empowers us to “mount up on wings as eagles.. to run and not be weary and.. to walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31).
Doubt and unbelief have many voices. These voices often come from those who are close to us. An example of this is Job’s wife, who advised him to let go of his integrity and “curse God and die” (Job 2:9). Doubt can arise within our own minds when seeded by unresolved fears and disappointments of the past. Doubt is also often whispered into our minds by Satan or one of his demonic emissaries assigned to our destruction. The point is this: Anything and anyone who seeks to lead us to doubt the word of God and the reality and necessity of the will of God is ultimately satanic in origin. How is this determined? Jesus said: “Satan is a liar and the father of all lies” (John 8:44). The thought or suggestion that God will not be true or can in any way prove false is a lie; therefore the author of that lie and for all lies, is Satan.
So what are some of the promises of God that we should rely on? Here are a few to get you started. It is written:
Zechariah 4:6
Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.
Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Hebrews 13:5
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Jude 1:24
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
Psalm 37:4 Delight thyself also in the LORD: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Matthew 7:7
Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
Matthew 6:27-29 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
29And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Isaiah 53:5
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
Ephesians 3:20
Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,
1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
The will to conquer does not reside within us without the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit of God who empowers us to accomplish the will of God. The Holy Spirit gives us the second wind of hope to do the will of God to the fullest in our lives, even after miserable failures. The restoration of Peter after he denied Jesus three times and the conversion of Paul are but two examples of how we should not look to our own strength as the source of our ability to succeed in the eyes of God. Instead, we should rely upon the promises of God to provide everything within and without us to ensure that we run the race and finish well.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Jesus said: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man cometh unto the Father but by me” (John 14:6). Therefore let us ever rely upon the truth of God, of Jesus, of the Holy Spirit, of the Godhead Who is the truth and “leads us into all truth” (John 16:13).
Reflection:
Knowing that God is the truth and cannot lie. Knowing that the Lord has given to His children abundant promises of His power, love, desire, strength and ability to deliver them. Knowing that there are satanic forces and my own sinful nature that will seek to cause me to doubt the word of God, what then is my prayer? My prayer is this: O most merciful, loving, compassionate, all powerful, wise, honest and holy God, I praise your name that you are truth, and your words are true. I bless your matchless and holy Son Jesus who is the truth, and I praise you for the gift of the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. Thank You, Father, Hallelujah! That you are all powerful, and that You are able to strengthen my spirit, soul and body with Your unfailing word and love, that Your word will accomplish that which You have purposed it to do in my life. Forgive me Lord for the many times I have doubted You. Help me Lord to recognize the exceeding great wickedness of the sin of doubting You. Help me Lord to reject the lies of the enemy that whispers doubt into the hearts of all men. May Your light so shine in me, Lord, that those who see my life will say that the word of the Lord is true. Thank You Lord for all Your many gifts and graces You have lavished upon your servants. Help me Father, to ever be grateful for the unceasing abundance of your blessings. These things I ask and pray in precious and holy name of Jesus. Amen and Amen!
Until next time: “Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might!”
