Rev 21:25 (KJV) “And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there.”
“No Night There”
When I was a child, the fact that there would be no night in Heaven, mystified me. I thought: “Who would want a world without night and day?” Now that I have grey hairs (lots of ’em), I see how Revelation 21:25 provides a looking-glass through which we can see nuances of just how different our reality (night and day) is from what the Lord wants for us (eternal light). If Heaven in its perfection banishes darkness, then what a curse darkness must be!
Today’s verse reveals that nightfall is a symbol of the fall of creation. God is light, and in Him, is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). Because God is light, there is no night in Heaven. This means that absence of light is a symbol of that which is not like God. Night time exists because sin exists.
The cycle of night and day began before the creation of Earth. So, night time, the dimming of light, was and is the heart-throb that symbolizes the calling forth of the Savior of the World. In night and day, we see the beacon that whispers the name of Jesus, the Lamb of God “slain from the foundation of the world” (Revelation 13:8).
In the ancient turning of day and night, we see the need for the Savior, and in the moonlight we see the promise of His coming. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light (Isaiah 9:2). Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). He is the light of the world (John 8:12). The Heavens do indeed declare the glory of God, and the firmament is His handiwork (Psalm 19:1).
For each of us, the turning of night and day will end. When we fall into eternal sleep, those who rest in Christ will awaken in a timeless land where the beauty and light of the Lord shines, uninterrupted.
May these words educate, comfort and encourage you to pray today. Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might!” (Ephesians 6:10).
