Stones of Remembrance Make Sure We Don’t Forget

Stones of Remembrance

The Good Shepherd, Jesus, cares for us and urges us to take communion in remembrance of Him.

Remembrance is important. In the Old Testament, we often read about how men and women of God marked the physical location of a deliverance with stones or the building of a well. For example, Joshua 4:20-22
 tells us:

And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’

We can’t do such things today, but we can make a written record of the acts of God in our lives. Keeping a journal is a good way to keep track of the many ways the Lord has made the crooked straight and the rough places plain.

Today I was looking through some emails that I sent to my god-daughter Michele and god-son Brandon. Both young Christians, they asked for some biblical references to be sent to them daily. I thought it was a great idea. Those emails morphed into a journal that became the precursor to this blog.
The email that I reviewed today was written in February of 2010, during a time of great challenge for my family. My younger brother had a stroke, and was experiencing unending seizure activity in his brain. Doctors were urging us to “let him go (take him off of life support)” because his EEG showed no brain activity other than seizures. My mother, a mighty woman of faith, in faith, said “no.” We decided to trust the Lord. Some of the doctors were upset with me. Because I am a doctor, they thought I should know better; and I did, just not the way they thought. I knew that with God all things are possible.

My family stood fast in faith, and long story short, my brother is still alive. The email you are about to read is my stone of remembrance, or “way back machine” that shows the goodness of the Lord.

Greetings in the matchless name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I am soooo tired, but in a good way. My brother is out of the ICU, and in a regular hospital room. What a blessing this is. Even though the path is rough, my mother and I are having many good moments of fellowship while on this journey. The LORD provided wonderfully for us. We have help from knowledgeable, helpful, and polite hospital staff who care lovingly for my brother.

This afternoon Mom and I sat down in the cafeteria where Gullah chefs prepared a wonderful meal. Today’s menu was “Frogmore stew” a deeply satisfying mixture of highly seasoned shrimp, corn, potatoes, okra, onion, garlic, and other seasonings. We also had scallops, fried flounder, and fried oysters, blueberry and pomegranate juice. Dessert was a hot sweet blueberry cobbler. Of course, I topped it off with a large cup of Starbucks coffee. Indeed, we are living the 23rd Psalm:

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1 The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,

3 he restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, [a]
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.

This day the Lord led us besides the still waters and our souls were restored.

May your faith and ability to fellowship and taste the sweetness of life remain intact during every test. Through every storm you face: Don’t forget to keep the faith.

Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
