The Word for Today Is #Still

Stillness is difficult to practice, especially when there are so many things to get your attention. There are serious things like bills, job responsibilities and upward mobility, personal and family health issues, civic and church demands, concerns about the past, and worries about tomorrow that keep our minds spinning often long into the night.

A busy mind often means a busy body, but to what avail? Maybe today’s kind of busyness and speed amplified by cell phones, faxes, and email, are what Proverbs would call “vanity…chasing the wind.” Multitasking is a way of life, but studies have shown that multitasking actually decreases attentiveness and efficiency.

The good Lord hard-wired our minds to work best when doing one thing at a time. Since we were born to process things one after another, and not at the same time, we would benefit from taking time to order things and set priorities. One of our highest priorities is to spend time communicating with God, Who has all power and knows all things.

Spending time alone with God gives clarity and peace about all our situations. But God is not going to “shout us down” everyday to get our attention. Attention requires time, but not time shared with a million other activities. Attention requires stillness in the moment with God. Stillness allows us to best “see” what God is telling us, to the fullness of understanding given to each of us. God is glorious, so glorious that He cannot be fully comprehended by our limited senses.

Stillness filters out life’s noises, so we can appreciate the beauty of God’s presence, and hear His “still small voice” that comforts, teaches, and guides us day-by-day. The word for today is #still:

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 NIV

Today, take time being still in God’s presence. If your living space is cluttered or “noisy,” try clearing out a space where you can be still, pray, and meditate on the word of God. During your still time, turn off your cell phone and put your laptop to sleep. At work, you can place a plant or photo on your desk to visually pull you into a more serene and quiet place.

Until next time, “Be strong in the Lord and the power of His might!”

Your friend in Christ,
