“Baba Yetu” (The Lord’s Prayer, in Swahili) by Christopher Tin, ft. Soweto Gospel Choir.
James 4:13-15 (ASV)
13 Come now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into this city, and spend a year there, and trade, and get gain: 14 whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that.
To-Do
There is a part of my mind that likes to think that I know which way my day is headed. I make “to-do” lists and download project management software that I don’t always use. But when the morning sunlight shines in my face, more often than not, my response is to thank the Lord for His mercy in allowing me to start another day. I should be diligent to follow this up with a prayer for guidance. There are times when I do this, but there are also times when I dive straight into work. Admittedly, the work goes smoother when there is a plan in place for what should be done. But: My work goes best when the Lord is at the helm. There’s nothing like the insight, inspiration and guidance of our Heavenly Father, and there really is NO FRIEND like Jesus.
Today’s verse reminds us of how fragile we really are. Because we are fragile, and time is both fleeting and fickle, then our plans are, well….frail. So in our business, and in our tendency to make plans, remember that God is sovereign. He alone determines the results of our plans, and He alone is in control of the breath we use to speak what we want to do. This is frightening, because it rightfully reminds us that we are small. But most of all, it is uplifting, because when our plans are in line with the will of God, we are infinitely able to succeed. May this thought daily encourage our hearts.
Don’t forget to bless the name of the Lord, and to be a blessing to someone today.
Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
