Completely Humble and Gentle (Ephesians 4:2)

The word for today is “humble:”

Humility is a valued treasure. I remember reading a story about the famous African-American scientist, George Washington Carver. Carver was standing outside of a hotel where he was registered as a guest when he was approached by a white female guest who insisted that he was being negligent in his duties by not immediately picking up her bags and carrying them into the hotel. Carver said nothing. Instead he politely picked up the woman’s luggage and carried it inside. I don’t know that I would have responded as calmly as George Washington Carver did, but I do know that his behavior is an example of humility and grace.

Humility Is Neither Ignorance Nor Stupidity

Nowadays, it’s fashionable to function on full-blast-brazen-brass all day long. Perhaps this is because people assume that humility is synonymous with stupidity and low-self esteem. True humility comes from a position of strength, not weakness. For believers, true humility requires being comfortable with your value as a child of God. Once you see yourself as God sees you, all images of debasement are erased. Humble people are harmless, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t strike back, or don’t know how to fight. Gideon was a humble soldier who destroyed many of the enemies of Israel.

God’s Love Makes You Free to Be Humble.

The Bible says that if the Son makes you free, you are free indeed (John 8:36). God’s people are free to be humble, because they have the inner riches of love, integrity, and security that come with living in the presence of Almighty God. The humility that God gives His children, gives us the power of character necessary to act in accordance with the truth rather than in accordance with the expectations of men. Embrace humility. Keep your footsteps far from pride or you will eat humble pie before you die. Ephesians 4:2 NIV says:

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
