Wanna “Know What Love Is?”
1 Corinthians 13: 4 (AMP) Love endures long and is patient and kind..
Like a many faceted jewel, love has many different aspects and characteristics that affect how its light will shine in our lives. If you ever wonder whether or not someone loves you, just examine their lives and interactions with you for evidence of kindness, patience and long suffering. So many times, Christians and non Christians alike stay knee deep in destructive relationships where there is no evidence of kindness, patience or long suffering. Young people lament in social media about the many ways in which someone they love have treated them in ways that are shameful to mention. Yet despite this, they continue to look for love, or assume that love is there. They forget about free will: Others are free to not love you back, no matter how much you love them. Also, they forget that the love of man does not compel anyone to love. Only the love of God can empower men and women to love.
I think it safe to say that all children start off assuming that their parents love them. But parents are people, and people are often unkind, impatient and unloving. Absence of kindness, patience and consideration in a parent can be a stumbling block that prevents us from believing that God is love, and that He will always act on behalf of our good. The kindness and patience of God are revealed in the many ways He causes all things to work together for the good of His children.
We know from Bible stories that the Lord will chastise His children. Because God is kind, He corrects His children. He gives us time to repent, and expects us to learn from our mistakes. At times, God’s correction is severe and visible. We are corrected so that we may be conformed to the image of Christ. Sin is to be abandoned. Sometimes it takes open shame for us to understand that we are better off without sin. Sin has been nailed to the cross where the debt was paid in full. This leaves us free to seek a life of righteousness.
Whatever your struggles with love and being loved are, remember this: love is kind, and God is love. To know God is to know true love. Where kindness is absent, so is love. If knowing that fact causes you pain, accept the discomfort and move on so that real love can find you.
Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
