God Is Light

1 John 1:5-7 (KJV)
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

God Is Light

God is light. In Him is no darkness at all. Where there is God, there is light. Where there is darkness, vision is limited. Where vision is limited, truth is hidden. Where truth is hidden, deception is possible. With deception comes danger, risk of loss and death. Darkness is the cloak that empowers the wicked, and it is  a prime characteristic of the evil one. Many relax under cover of darkness, because it gives them an opportunity to let their inhibitions give way to forbidden thoughts and actions. Many wait until night fall to rob, kill and steal. Acts committed in darkness require works of darkness such as lies to remain covered.

The word “light,” as it is used in today’s verse means “to shine or make manifest, especially by rays” (Strong’s Talking Greek and Hebrew Dictionary). The light of God makes manifest. God is the light that shines and shatters darkness. The Lord uncovers the works of darkness. He is the Revealer of truth. Where God is, there is no deception, no slight of hand to cloud the truth.

God is also love. 1 John 4: 8 says: “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” The love of God who is light shines upon the dark heart, revealing harmful emotions such as envy and hatred. Those who hate operate outside of the love of God. How many people claim to be Christians but willingly embrace racism and other types of hatred? 1 John 2:9-10 (KJV) says: He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. Love is the litmus test for true Christianity.

Brothers and sisters, the light of God is more than a metaphor. It is a reality that that demands that we live in love and truth. Today, ask the Lord to search your heart. Pray for God’s mercy and forgiveness for all that is of darkness and hate.

May these words enlighten and comfort you today. Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
