Remembering My Father on Memorial Day

My father's flag draped coffin.

My father’s coffin, flanked by Marines.

This month marks my first birthday, first Mother’s Day, and first “Decoration Day ” (Memorial Day), without my Dad. Looking at the photo I took of his flag draped coffin surrounded by Marines, I feel so sad, but also proud. Black Marines suffered so much, but my Father and the Black soldiers in my neighborhood (who were among the first Black Marines), always kept their faith and their dignity. My Father, M/Sgt Vernon Lights was a FIERCE WARRIOR who thrice survived ship wreck during WWII. I remember him telling me how he had to swim “in the Pacific Ocean turned red by American blood.” I measured every heartache and disappointment against that image. Whatever monster I was facing, it was less than that, I had nothing to fear. If I could have half my Father’s courage, I’ll be alright. Rest in peace, Dad. I’m so proud to be your child. Semper Fi.

Friends, enjoy this day, and remember those who sacrificed for your freedom.

God bless America.
