Sent To Do

Hebrews 12:12-13 (KJV)

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; 13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.

Sent to Do

The image given to us today’s verse is a paradox of weakness and strength. We are told to lift up the hands which hang down: Hands are instruments of communication, contact and building. The word literally means the ability or power to grasp- an instrument. Here, we are given the image of hands that have an ability to grasp but are not grasping. Rather, they are relaxed, passive, and hanging down. Hands which do not grasp, cannot receive. How many of God’s gifts haven’t we received because our hands did not grasp them? The words “hang down” actually mean “to relax,” but they also mean “to send.” This is telling us that inactive, relaxed hands have the potential to do. Whether or not they are used, they remain sent-to-do, to accomplish, communicate, contact, and build. Our hands are sent by God to do the will of God.

Hands cannot be sent unless they are mobilized. Hands may do the taking, but it’s our knees that do the traveling. Our knees are our means of mobility. Whether we travel by car, bus or plan, our knees are the means by which we go to do anything. But here we are told that the knees are sick. The image is one of instruments which have been sent, but the means of deliverance have been disabled. This has echoes of “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak,” and reminds us gently of the Apostles who slept as Jesus wrestled at Gethsemane.

How many of us have been sent to do a specific work, but are paralyzed in an unwillingness and/ or ability to get there? Like Jonah, do we refuse to lift up our hands because our “knees” (will to do) are made weak by disdain for those to whom we are being sent (a boss, a difficult co-worker or hateful family member)? How many are not helped because we cling to fear for our personal finances and refuse to pay tithes and offerings so that missionaries (the “hands and feet of the church”) can be sent to spread light in the dark areas of our world? Whatever the cause of our feeble knees, God is willing and able to heal us. He has the power to heal us. He has the power to make the crooked straight, and the rough places plain. (Luke 3:5) Whenever our hands are not fulfilling their mission, today’s verse tells us to lift them up. We lift our hands to Praise God! We have the ability to bless the name of the LORD GOD ALMIGHTY! We are able at all times to be a blessing unto others. May we ever be willing to be sent by God to do His will.

Because you love God, and because you want to obey the command of Jesus to “go into all the world and preach the gospel,” may you, by the power of the Holy Spirit, be a blessing to someone today.

Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
