There are many believers today who define themselves as Christians, yet they go to church only two or three times per year. Many do not go to church at all. No few within this group read and quote from their Bibles. What’s wrong with this picture is that those who are not functioning members of a church are living in disobedience to the word of God. Christians are not to live as though the body of Christ, which is the church, is irrelevant. Today’s verse tells us that we are not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together.

So what does going to church do for us? Church is a place where Christians gather to learn more about God and His word. We also attend church to learn how the word of God is to be applied to our daily lives. We go to receive instructions from the LORD Himself, for where “two or more” are gathered in the name of Jesus, He is there in the midst of them. The use of the words “two or more” precludes being alone.

We also attend church to communicate with fellow believers. Our conversation should be such that we interact with others in a spirit of love and faith, and they interact with us in the same way. Today’s verse says that we should interact with fellow believers in a spirit of exhortation. The original Greek word that is translated as exhorting, means to pray and be of good comfort. The world we live in is cruel and unforgiving, and the church is where we go for healing, comfort, encouragement and instructions so that we can overcome evil with good.

Our verse today also shows us that all believers are invited to attend church by Christ Himself. We know this because, first of all, today’s verse is in the Bible, which is the word of God. We also know this because the original Greek word that is translated as “assembling” is derived from a word meaning “complete collection.” We are to attend church because our presence and the use of our calling makes it complete. You are invited because you are told that you belong there. Follow the command, accept the invitation, & GO!

So, do not amputate the body of Christ. Find a good Bible believing church. Talk to friends and relatives to help you find a church home. If you know of one already, make a point to go. You are more than just a number. You are important. Without you, the church where you need to be is incomplete.

Until we meet again: “Be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” (Ephesians 6:10)
